Ruptures in the midst of Spring Blooms

Around my 5th Spring in New England I started to notice how much I disliked April. I know April showers bring May flowers, but I grew up in the desert where showers come in February and March comes with the beginning of blooms and a deliciously warm April. Thank God for work from home life because for the last two years I have been able to spend April in the warm and sunny Chaparral! Upon my return to my New England home a few days ago, I was met with the most inconvenient airport problems, a running late boyfriend, and 5pm traffic (rupture). I took deep breaths and remembered the bliss of the sun kissing my arm in a similar drive back in the desert (balance). Then work was suddenly busy, I couldn’t find time to get outside for a walk or breath in some fresh air. My New England home was suddenly closing in on me (rupture) but the weekend soon arrived and the beginning of the New England blooms had begun. The trees were filled with flowers, the sun was out, and I had time for a few walks with my darling and baby dog. I was once again reminded of the desert sun and the beautiful flowers I have been surrounded by since late March (calmness).

I sometimes wonder where my anxiety begins and ends in relation to my dual-home life. And if this middle space is a type of desert system that colonized-life adapts and immunizes itself to, like the flowers in the picture. Those are my grandma’s tropical flowers living their best life in the middle of the Chihuahuan Desert. I wonder how I can bloom so openly and freely in my own duality? How do I soften my own edges in the midst of an explosive rupture?

What does your middle place meandering look and feel like?

With so much tenderness,

P.S. – You may have noticed that the voice in this post is singular instead of plural. That’s because Lauren and I have decided to take turns writing to the community instead of writing one post together each month. This way we’ll be able to share more about our individual experiences in the context of our collective work. We hope you’ll enjoy getting to know each of us in this way – let us know what you think!
